Hafez is a rare restaurant in Japan where you can enjoy Persian (Iranian) cuisine.

This time, I visited an authentic Persian restaurant in the Yotsubashi area of Osaka:

“Hafez (HAFEZ).”

Persian (Iranian) cuisine is still quite rare in Japan, making this a valuable spot where you can experience authentic flavors in an exotic setting.
Today, I’ll focus on two popular dishes: the Chelo Kebab (2,700 yen) and the Baghali Polo (1,300 yen).

What Is Hafez?

Hafez is a Persian restaurant located just a short walk from Yotsubashi Station.
The interior is decorated with Middle Eastern elements, creating a relaxing and atmospheric space.

The staff are friendly, making it a welcoming place even for those trying Persian cuisine for the first time.

Chelo Kebab (2,700 yen)

First, the classic Persian dish: Chelo Kebab.

The set includes:

  • Basmati rice
  • Salad
  • Grilled tomato
  • Two skewers of kebab

A truly satisfying and well-balanced plate.

The Kebab

The kebabs are grilled to perfection—crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
The seasoning is relatively mild, allowing the natural flavor of the meat to stand out.

Compared to the kebabs commonly seen in Japan, these feel more refined and focused on simplicity, yet deeply flavorful.

With Basmati Rice

The light and fluffy basmati rice pairs perfectly with the kebab.
You can subtly taste the richness of butter and the aroma of saffron, which elevate the entire dish.

The acidity of the grilled tomato adds a nice contrast, keeping the meal enjoyable until the very end.

Baghali Polo (1,300 yen)

Next is the Baghali Polo.

This Persian-style pilaf is made with fava beans, herbs, and lamb.

With the first bite, the refreshing aroma of herbs spreads across your palate,
blending beautifully with the soft texture of the beans and the rich flavor of the lamb.

The lamb is not overly gamey, making it approachable even for beginners.
Thanks to the herbs, the dish feels light and well-balanced despite its richness.

Simple yet layered with flavor, it’s a dish that truly showcases the depth of Persian cuisine.

Final Thoughts

Hafez (HAFEZ) in Yotsubashi offers:

  • Authentic Persian cuisine
  • Simple seasoning that highlights the natural flavors of ingredients
  • An exotic and relaxing atmosphere

If you want to try a classic → Chelo Kebab
If you want to explore deeper flavors → Baghali Polo

Because these dishes are not commonly found, visiting this restaurant becomes a unique culinary experience.

If you’re looking to try something new and different, this is definitely a place worth visiting.
