[Osaka, Namba] A Farewell Visit to "Misono Building" — A Cultural Landmark of the Showa Era
Hello, this is the Baomu Project!
Today, I’d like to share my visit to the legendary Misono Building, a symbol of Osaka's Minami subculture. This iconic spot, loved by generations, is sadly closing its doors in spring 2025. I visited just before its closure to experience its unique atmosphere one last time.
◆ What is the Misono Building?
Located in Namba, Osaka, the Misono Building first opened in 1956 as a lavish banquet hall and cabaret. Over the decades, it transformed into a maze-like hub of underground and subculture scenes, becoming a beloved cultural melting pot.
From the outside, the building radiates vintage Showa-era charm. Inside, narrow corridors are lined with eclectic bars, snack pubs, fortune-telling booths, live music venues, and art galleries—each oozing with individuality.
◆ Misono Universe: A Creative Core
At the heart of the building is Misono Universe, a large event hall repurposed from its cabaret days. This space has hosted a wide variety of performances and exhibitions, ranging from concerts and DJ events to film screenings and art installations.
It's even featured in the film Night Is Short, Walk On Girl (starring Gen Hoshino), adding to its status as a cultural landmark for creatives and artists.
◆ Closing Announcement Sparks Outpouring of Emotion
Due to aging infrastructure and upcoming redevelopment, the Misono Building is scheduled to close by the end of March 2025. News of its closure has been met with an outpouring of memories and regret on social media, with people calling it “a place of youth” and “a one-of-a-kind space.”
When I visited, many were there to say their goodbyes—snapping photos, reminiscing, and having a final drink at their favorite spots.
◆ Final Thoughts
The Misono Building is more than just an old complex. It’s a place suspended in time—a rare combination of nostalgia and cutting-edge creativity.
If you plan to visit Osaka, I highly recommend stopping by before it closes. The unique atmosphere, the Showa-era echoes, and the deeply rooted local culture will leave a lasting impression.
Don’t miss your chance to step into this unforgettable world.
