An Israeli restaurant I met in Kyoto! Falafel Garden(Updated in December 2020)

 Good morning

The restaurant we are introducing today is an Israeli restaurant.

Store name: Falafel Garden

Location: 15-2 Tanaka Kamiyanagi-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto-shi, Kyoto

It is an Israeli restaurant located about a 2-minute walk north along the Kamo River from Demachiyanagi Station.

Product name: Falafel ball

Price: 420 yen

It's a croquette-like dish of chickpea paste kneaded with coriander (pakuchi), and is a vegan dish that doesn't use dairy products or eggs.

The spices work a little, and the fluffy texture inside is surprisingly new, and the snack sensation is irresistible.

Product name: Hummus paste

Price: 506 yen

Dish of chickpea paste (also known as galvanzo chikupee)! !!

It's seasoned with spices, but it's delicious enough for those who don't like spicy food.

Product name: Half Pita

Price: 150 yen

Bread that is a little thicker than naan is broken into bags.

I put hummus paste and falafel in half pita and ate it. A little recommended! !!

Product name: Couscous

Price: 1,470 yen

The sourness of the orange herb carrot salad makes you appetite.
I ate granular pasta (a rag of wheat) and chicken with chickpeas and seasonal vegetable soup.

The spicy chicken is balanced with the tenderness of the granular pasta, and the soup with a faint turmeric scent mixes with the exotic atmosphere! !!

 Good morning

Today, I would like to introduce the 2nd and 3rd floor gazebos of the Old Mitsui Family Shimogamo Bettei (Important Cultural Property) in Kyoto.

Historic Site: Old Mitsui Family Shimogamo Bettei (Important Cultural Property) 2nd and 3rd floor gazebo special exhibition

Location: 58-2 Shimogamo Miyakawa-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto-shi, Kyoto

It was made by relocating the main building of the Meiji era and expanding the entrance building at the villa of the former Mitsui family, a wealthy merchant completed in 1925. It is designated as an important cultural property.

Price: 900 yen (up to the 3rd floor)

Period: November 19th (Thursday) -December 15th (Tuesday), 2020 (Special opening period on the 2nd and 3rd floors)

The Shimogamo Bettei consists of three buildings: the main building, the entrance building, and the tea room.

A magnificent scroll of Ito Jakuchu, an important cultural property of Japan, "Saichifu" (a full-scale replica) was on display, but the image could not be saved. (I'm sorry)

You can overlook the garden from the 3rd floor! !!

It is said that you can also see the capital ware.

No ~ It ’s a superb view ~

The pond in the garden has a clear cleanliness and enhances the atmosphere.

The 2nd floor will be open for a fee during periods other than the special exhibition (8,000 yen all day !!)

A Taiwanese tea shop that I accidentally found in a back alley! FUDAO(Updated in December 2020)

 Good morning

Today, I would like to introduce a Taiwanese tea shop that I accidentally found in a back alley in Kyoto.

Store name: FUDAO

Location: 9-3 Tanaka Shimoyanagi-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto-shi, Kyoto

I found an article that seems to have been renovated from an old private house and was previously described as a wine shop.

As expected, it's a Machiya! !! The ceiling is high.

Product name: Douhua

Price: 650 yen (4 toppings)

Tapioca, red beans, lost peanuts, taro + sweet potato dumplings

Limited time offer only for 3 consecutive holidays in November! !! (Sumimasen late)

You can choose warm or cold syrup (the image is warm syrup)

The tapioca, which is chewy with authentic tofu, matched mysteriously.

Product name: Douhua

Price: 580 yen (2 toppings)

    Mung beans and peanuts

The image is a warm syrup

The sweetness of mung beans, moderate syrup, and bittern of tofu will be stylishly decided! !!

(Choice of toppings !!)

I haven't uploaded it because it didn't look good, but Alishan Takayama Oolong Tea (500 yen) warmed my cold body moderately.

[Kyoto Higashiyama] Indulge in the Famous Tenshinhan at "Marushin Hanten," a Beloved Local Chinese Restaurant!

Hello! This is the Baomu Project.

Today, we visited Marushin Hanten, a long-established Chinese restaurant located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama Ward.

Loved by locals for years, this spot is especially known as a "late-night savior" thanks to its extended hours. I’ll be sharing a report on their famous Tenshinhan (crab omelet rice), Twice-Cooked Pork, gyoza, and ramen—all full of irresistible flavor!

◆ Restaurant Info

  • Name: Marushin Hanten

  • Address: 431-3 Nanseikaiko-cho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture

  • Access: Just a short walk from Higashiyama Station on the Tozai subway line

  • Hours: 11:00 AM – 6:00 AM (Subject to change)

◆ Specialty: Meltingly Soft Tenshinhan

The star of the show at Marushin Hanten is undoubtedly their Tenshinhan—a fluffy omelet draped in a generous helping of sweet-and-sour sauce over rice.

As you cut into the omelet, warm and tender rice is revealed underneath. The sauce is perfectly balanced and enhances the dish beautifully. It's so light yet flavorful, you’ll finish the whole bowl before you know it. No wonder it’s their #1 bestseller!

◆ Flavorful Twice-Cooked Pork That Pairs Perfectly with Rice

Another popular dish is their Twice-Cooked Pork (Hoikoro).

The rich miso sauce clings deliciously to the pork, paired with crisp cabbage for a dish that demands a side of steamed rice. While it’s a staple of Chinese cuisine, Marushin Hanten’s version stands out thanks to expert preparation and deep umami.

◆ Crispy and Juicy Gyoza

You can’t skip the gyoza!

Perfectly seared with a crispy bottom and chewy top, each dumpling bursts with savory juices when bitten into. They’re just the right size for a side dish, and dipping them in a vinegar-heavy sauce gives a refreshingly tangy twist.

◆ Nostalgic and Comforting Ramen

Their ramen is another must-try.

Clear, soy sauce-based broth filled with traditional toppings like sliced pork, bean sprouts, and green onions makes for a heartwarming bowl of noodles. It’s simple, yet masterfully executed—ideal as a lunch dish or after-drinks comfort food.

◆ Final Thoughts

Marushin Hanten offers the perfect blend of authentic Chinese techniques and Japanese flavor profiles—making it a true gem among local “machi-chuka” (town Chinese) restaurants.

Whether it’s the famous Tenshinhan, the robust Hoikoro, the juicy gyoza, or the nostalgic ramen, every dish hits the mark. And with its late-night hours, it’s perfect for night owls or travelers looking for an authentic local experience.

If you're visiting Kyoto, don’t miss the chance to enjoy some top-tier Chinese comfort food at Marushin Hanten!
