Journey to Turkey 【Historical Walk in Osaka】Discover the Yamamoto Residence on the Takeuchi Kaido — A House That Breathes History

Hello! This is Baomu Project.

Today, I’d like to introduce a historical gem located in Fujiidera City, Osaka — the Yamamoto Residence, a designated cultural property situated along Japan’s oldest official road, the Takeuchi Kaido.

This former merchant house, quietly nestled along the old highway, offers a rare glimpse into the everyday life and bustling commerce of the Edo period.

◆ What is the Takeuchi Kaido?

Before diving into the residence, let’s briefly look at the Takeuchi Kaido.

This ancient road, known as Japan’s oldest national highway, stretches from Sakai City in Osaka to the Asuka region in Nara.
It was established during the Asuka Period and played a key role in the dispatch of envoys to China and the transmission of continental culture.
Sometimes referred to as the “Silk Road of Japan,” it’s dotted with historic sites and traditional buildings that still retain their original charm.

◆ What is the Yamamoto Residence?

Now, onto the main feature — the Yamamoto Residence.

This former merchant townhouse (machiya) was built in the late Edo period (19th century) and once served as the home and shop of a medicine merchant.
Its structure features a tiled gabled roof and a wide frontage with deep rooms, showcasing the typical layout of Edo-period townhouses built along major roads.

Highlights include:

  • Traditional lattice doors and mushikomado (insect-cage-style windows)

  • An interior courtyard and preserved earthen floors

  • A floor plan where daily life and business coexisted

These features vividly bring the past to life for modern visitors.

◆ Visiting Tips

The residence is now owned and managed by Fujiidera City, and is occasionally open to the public with guided tours available on specific dates.
When visiting, it’s highly recommended to stroll along the old road and perhaps combine your trip with nearby shrines, temples, or burial mounds.

Bring your camera, take a quiet walk through history, and enjoy the timeless atmosphere of the Takeuchi Kaido.

◆ Final Thoughts

The Yamamoto Residence is not just an old house — it’s a living cultural property that reflects the history of the Takeuchi Kaido and the lives of its people.

If you’re looking to explore Japanese history or enjoy a peaceful walk through time, this hidden spot is well worth a visit.
